Lottery funding to help domestic violence victims

The Big Lottery Fund is to award £12 million to help over 20 different domestic violence support groups across Scotland, reports the BBC.

The Fund said that it recognised funding in this area was badly needed in light of recent police figures, which show that the number of recorded incidents of domestic abuse rose from 59,847 in 2011/12 to 60,080 incidents in 2012/13.

The organisations to benefit from the funding include NHS Lanarkshire, which is to receive around £700,000 to help fund its domestic abuse response project.

Male domestic abuse charity, Abused Men in Scotland, is to be awarded around £420,000 to help it widen the services it offers to support male victims of domestic violence.

A spokesperson for the charity express their delight at receiving the funding, and said the money would be used to extend the availability and scope of its helpline and to introduce a face to face support service.
