Fewer Americans choose to get remarried

The remarriage rate has fallen by around 40% in America over the past 20 years according to a recent data analysis, reports USA Today.

Sociologist Susan Brown, who led the analysis for the National Centre for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University found that in 2011, only 29 out of every 1,000 Americans who were divorced or widowed got remarried, compared to 50 per 1,000 in 1990.

This decline was seen in all age groups, but was most significant in people under the age of 35. Researchers suggested that the decline was mainly due to the growing popularity of cohabitation and the fact that people are waiting longer before they get married for the first time.

"Cohabitation has opened up options for people that weren't there 20 years ago," commented Susan Brown to the USA Today. "It affords the benefits of marriage without the legal constraints."
