Adoption up by one third in Wales

The latest Welsh statistics on adoption, outcomes and placements of looked after children have been published, showing an unprecedented 33% rise in the number of children being adopted in Wales.

The data also reveals an increase in the number of children placed for adoption.

The Welsh Government aims to continue to drive up standards and ensure that more children, where adoption is in their best interest, do not drift in the care system.

This can only be achieved by delivering some adoption functions through greater collaboration across regions and sectors. A National Adoption Service is a key commitment for the Welsh Government and will see a greater emphasis on promoting adoption and increasing the pool of adopters.

Deputy Minister for Social Services, Gwenda Thomas said:

“I welcome the publication of the latest statistics on looked after children. I am greatly encouraged to see that the number of adoptions has increased by over a third on the previous year’s figures.

“I am determined this upward trend will continue as we move forward in delivering on my commitment for a National Adoption Service.”
