Money arguments are especially damaging to relationships

Arguments take place in even the strongest of relationships, but apparently the subject of a couple’s arguments could predict how likely they are to get divorced.

Researchers at Kansas State University found that couples who argue mainly about money are much more likely to end up divorced than couples who argue about other topics, such as their in-laws or children.

"In the study, we controlled for income, debt and net worth," said Sonya Britt, assistant professor of family studies and human services and program director of personal financial planning. "Results revealed it didn't matter how much you made or how much you were worth. Arguments about money are the top predictor for divorce because it happens at all levels."

The study also found that arguments about money tend to involve harsher language and last longer than other arguments, and take couples a longer time to get over them.

"You can measure people's money arguments when they are very first married," Britt said. "It doesn't matter how long ago it was, but when they were first together and already arguing about money, there is a good chance they are going to have poor relationship satisfaction."
