New help for families going through separation or divorce

Scottish families going through separation or divorce in Scotland will now be able to get additional support and advice after three charities were awarded the contract to provide support services.

CHILDREN 1ST has received funding from the DWP to provide a support and advice service throughout Scotland, in partnership with One Parent Families Scotland and the Scottish Child Law Centre.

The service will be called the Family Decision Making service, and is expected to go live in March next year. It will help divorced or separating parents to reach agreement over issues involving child contact, maintenance and residence while ensuring that the child’s best interests are taken into account.

CHILDREN 1ST chief executive Anne Houston said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to deliver this ground-breaking partnership. Separation and divorce is a very difficult, stressful and emotional experience for parents and children, especially with the added pressure of changes to the benefits system.

“This service will address conflict and provide support to enable parents reach agreement on difficult issues while keeping children’s best interests at the heart of decisions that affect them.”
