A new Act that should provide greater support for children and families received Royal Assent last week. The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act covers a wide range of issues relating to children, some of which have proved to be controversial.

Issues covered by the Act include:

Controversially, the Act also provides for the creation of a ‘named person’, such as a health visitor or head teacher, for each child – a role that has been described as that of a ‘state guardian’.
